Expedition Information & Summary
Climbing the highest point of every
Province and Territory in Canada is an historic adventure of discovery
and exploration. This Expedition, which will be traveling from
Queens County in Prince Edward Island to Nunavut’s Ellesmere
Island, and from the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories
and its un-named summit, to the top of Canada in the Yukon, is
‘CanaTREK – the Summits of Canada Expedition.”
Traveling through ten Provincial and
National Parks, three of which are designated World Heritage Sites,
the Expedition will showcase Canada from sea-to-sea-to-sea and
all the highpoints in between to Canadians and the world. To reach
all thirteen summits, the Expedition will drive over 25,000 kilometres,
canoe over 400 kilometres, fly to and land on two glaciers, land
on the Ice Cap, walk, snow-shoe, ski, bike, and climb over 90,000
vertical feet - three times the height of Mount Everest!
Blessed with dramatic scenery through
a variety of geographical landscapes, our trips will range from
one-day hikes to month long assaults. The thirteen provincial
and territorial highpoints represent a modern day adventure. The
journey and summits range from beautiful, remote and dangerous
settings to gentle hikes waiting to be shared with Canadians and
the world.
The Expedition has eight goals in its
quest:
| 1 - |
To
make Canada better known to Canadians and the world. |
| 2 - |
To
put the first Canadians on top of the "high-point"
of every province and territory in the country. |
| 3 - |
To
foster a healthier Canada by encouraging children and adults
across the nation to become more physically active. |
| 4 - |
To
deliver the first live broadcast from the top of Canada,
"Live from Logan". |
| 5 - |
To
scientifically measure the height of Mount Logan, Fairweather
Mountain, Barbeau Peak and the Ishpatina Ridge. |
| 6 - |
To
offer educational learning opportunities to teachers and
students around the Expedition. |
| 7 - |
To
film and photograph the provincial and territorial summit
expeditions, and to share the human and geographical stories
through photograph and film. |
| 8 - |
To
educate about "Climate Change" and to promote
environmentally friendly "Leave No Trace Principles". |
The Expedition will use technology to form strong partnerships with
the media:
· Television: live broadcasts, in-studio
interviews
· Print: daily journals, photographs,
stories, interviews
· Radio: calls from the mountains
· Internet: live virtual conference forums,
blogs, email, videos, interviews.
Fitness &
Health – ‘One Step at a Time, the Mountains we Climb’
The Expedition will be a Canadian fitness and health model, delivering
an exciting and dramatic reality adventure to encourage and increase
physical activities with individuals and especially students and
youth.
· Link regular exercise, sports and physical activities
to increase cardio and physical
capacity.
· Present fitness and health aspects of the climbs while
visiting schools and groups.
· Challenge people to become more active by being part
a challenge.
· Share the training and fitness programs of the climbers.
· Monitor the health of the climbers before and on the
mountains.
· Offer lesson plans focusing on fitness and health for
students and schools.
· Deliver a health message theme.
Education - ‘A
Higher Learning Experience’
The Summits of Canada Expedition is a modern day adventure learning
opportunity that will assist institutions with traditional curriculums
in science, art, health, social studies, geography, math, history,
and physical education
Already, over 165 schools from throughout Canada and 10 different
countries from around the world have registered with the Summits
of Canada for their students to use the Expedition as an educational
tool.
Education is evolving.
More than ever, educators are seeking innovative ways to improve
student achievement, promote quality teaching, and motivate students.
School leaders, superintendents and teachers are working harder
than ever to become more effective at managing change and innovation
in the Digital Age.
There is no charge for schools to participate
with the expedition, or for teachers and students to incorporate
the various lesson plans from Summits of Canada into part of their
academic school year. This ensures that the Expedition is open
to everyone regardless of individual economic status or possible
school budgeting limitations.
Additional Expedition
Objectives
Other highlights of the Summits of Canada Expedition include:
1. The first live television and radio broadcast from the top
of Canada,
“Live from Logan.”
2. GPS re-measurement of Mount Logan, the top of Canada.
3. GPS measurement of BC's and Ontario’s highest points,
Fairweather Mountain
and Ishpatina Ridge.
4. Official naming of the highest mountain in the Northwest Territories.
5. Student programs with the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto,
Ontario.
6. Centre for Distant Learning Institute developed science tests
for on the mountains.
7. Alpine Club of Canada’s Centennial celebrations will
be marked by carrying their flag
to the top of Canada.
Ideally, the climbing of the summits
will take place over a one year time frame, but this schedule
is ultimately dependent upon weather conditions.
The Summits of Canada Expedition Team understands that getting
to the top of any mountain starts by taking one step at a time.
We believe that the legacy of this quest is not the footprints
we will leave on the mountains, but rather the positive impact
and benefits it will have on people’s lives.
Let us take that first step together
in one of the greatest Expedition’s in Canadian history.
Together we can make a difference.
